When renting an apartment, be sure to stipulate whether you want a furnished or unfurnished apartment. An unfurnished apartment is completely empty including the kitchen. Be prepared to purchase or rent furnishings, phones, kitchenware, and linens. Cleaning service costs extra. It will be your responsibility to have the electricity, water, and any other utilities services activated and terminated.

During the summer months only (from July 1 through August 31) Conference Services has a limited number of on-campus student apartments for rent. These apartments are rented on a first-come, first served basis and may be rented by the week or month. To rent a student apartment, contact Conference Services directly at (858) 534-4220 or email conferenceinfo@ucsd.edu.

Arrival Information

Please Note--Important information regarding payments to non-immigrants:

It is critical for you to understand your visa options before you enter the U.S. For detailed information on specific visas and reimbursement procedures, please visit the UCSD Visa Information page

Medical Insurance:
Having adequate U.S. medical coverage is very important; the university will not sponsor a visitor that does not have at least $100,000 in medical coverage. Using your home insurance coverage is acceptable, provided: 1) it is available to you in the U.S. 2) there is a local hospital that will recognize that insurance 3) it covers the $100,000 minimum

If you decide to use your home insurance, you will need to bring some form of proof of this insurance with you. A copy must be included in your department file.

Should you choose to purchase insurance while you are in the U.S., there are options available to you through the university. These may be obtained upon your arrival, or the department's personnel manager can mail the application forms to you. For the most updated and detailed information on these options, please see the Benefits for Postdoctoral and Research Personnel Web site and The International Center for Visiting Scholars.

Please review all information carefully in the Arrival Information packet which the International Center will give you upon your arrival.
