Ivan Evans received his B.A. (honours) at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught at the University of the Western Cape and UCLA before joining the Department of Sociology at UCSD. In addition to articles on South Africa, he has published Bureaucracy and Race: Native Administration in South Africa (1997). He teaches courses on change in modern South Africa, race and ethnicity, political sociology, urban studies, social movements, and the sociology of intellectuals, and also has a special interest in sociological analyses of modernity/post-modernity. Professor Evan's current research contrasts the relationship between blacks and Jews in South Africa and the United States.
